The Village Petaler
A Floral Studio that has served Cedarville University for three years is now coming to a downtown storefront!

Trailblazing, Teamwork & Triumph is Focus of Cedarville's Robotic Team
CEDARVILLE, OHIO – As defending champions in the American Society of Engineering Education’s (ASEE) Robotics Competition, Cedarville University’s team of engineering students will put its title on the line when it competes in the 2024 competition in Portland, Oregon. The event begins on Monday, June 24.
The Autonomous Robotics Competition is an event hosted at the ASEE annualconference. The event involves six to 10 engineering teams with freshman and sophomore students designing, building and competing with autonomous robots that fit a unique yearly prompt and criteria, including strict dimension limits within a $500 budget.
Cedarville University first led a team in the competition in 2001. Guided by advisor Dr. Clint Kohl, senior professor of computer engineering, Cedarville students have used the opportunity to expand their learning and test their knowledge alongside other college students. Kohl first heard about the event when he served as a member of the ASEE and realized the potential that the experience could offer to Cedarville’s students. As an underclassmen-only event, Kohl saw how the competition could be used to bolster confidence and push students out of their comfort zones, no matter what branch of engineering students might be a part of.
All majors from the School of Engineering are welcome to try out for the team, including computer science majors, computer engineers, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers.
“We have a lot of competitions at Cedarville that are connected to the upperclassmen, such as their Senior Design Projects,” said Kohl. “But we’re getting so many students who have participated in programs and tournaments in high school who are itching for a chance to be challenged before their senior year, and the ASEE Competition provides that. It helps prepare them for the more challenging aspects of their majors and hone their skills as future engineers.”
While Kohl has seen Cedarville’s teams enjoy multiple wins at the competition, he stresses that its greatest asset isn’t in the act of competing, but in teaching its competitors that they have what it takes to work together. In what is often the first college-level project its team members participate in, students are pushed to their limits and challenged to work side-by-side in different project groups such as the mechanical design group, the testing team and the programming team. This overall team structure helps teach competitors the value of teamwork and of reliance on other members within their organization to have their back and bring their projects home, which is something that Kohl maintains is priceless.
“Competitions like these bring out the practical aspect of engineering that, at the end of the day, we have to get projects done, and we’re capable of doing so,” said Kohl. “Oftentimes we engineers can dream high and lofty, but sometimes we have to stop dreaming and start building our dreams into reality. The first step of that process is believing that we can, and the teaching moments for that is this competition’s greatest strength.”

Cedarville University Claims 14th World Solar Splash Championship
CEDARVILLE, OHIO -- The most decorated team in the history of the World Solar Splash competition just added another accomplishment to its lengthy list. The Cedarville University team of engineering students received the George Ettenheim Memorial World Championship trophy for winning the 30th annual World Solar Splash event at Champions Park Lake in Springfield on Sunday, June 9. This is the 14th time Cedarville has claimed the top honor--the most championships of any competitor.
The victory came one year after the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez (UPRM) overtook the Cedarville team for the top prize. This year, the roles were reversed as UPRM finished in second place with a 870.72 score--more than 100 points behind Cedarville's 987.70 score out of a possible 1,000 points. It was Cedarville's most impressive victory to date as it registered its highest score in history.
The University of New Mexico placed third with 731.75 points, followed by Carnegie Mellon University (521.55) and Stony Brook University (480.04). Locally, the University of Dayton finished sixth in the nine-team event with 399.96 points. UD was also the recipient of the Teamwork award and Carnegie Mellon was awarded the Most Improved trophy.
Cedarville dominated in each of the water events--slalom, endurance, and sprint. With a possible 850 points in these three categories, Cedarville was perfect in each one to outdistance any other team.
Each competitor is a student team that spends the previous year designing, constructing, and testing their solar boat. The boats, driven by a single driver, vary in appearance but must conform to size, power, and safety specifications.
Changes to the rules for 2024 required that the boats compete in slalom, sprint, and endurance events with solar panels in place on the crafts. Batteries supplement direct solar power for all events, but must be charged by solar panels only.
The first SOLAR SPLASH competition was held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1994 with 11competitors. Since the initial competition, more than 90 American universities, 11 international universities, and five high school teams have participated.
The 2025 Solar Splash world event will take place June 3-7 at Champions Park Lake at the Clark County Fairgrounds in Springfield, Ohio.
SOLAR SPLASH is a trademark of Solar Splash Inc., a non-profit organization formed to promote engineering education and interest in solar innovation. Solar Splash Inc. seeks to involve college and high school students in hands-on educational activity by hosting the SOLAR SPLASH competition each year in late spring or early summer.
Are Natural Products the Solution to Cancer Treatment? Dr. Samson Amos' Groundbreaking Study
CEDARVILLE, OHIO – Walking through his village in Nigeria, Dr. Samson Amos, chair and associate professor of pharmaceutical sciences at Cedarville University, heard a woman’s persistent cries.
Having recently graduated with his Ph.D. in pharmacology from the University of Nigeria, Amos knew he could not ignore his neighbor’s cries. He found her with eyes closed and tears streaming down her face — she had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer.
Upon hearing Amos’ familiar voice, the woman said, “Samson, please help women like me.” Moved with compassion, Amos knew he was being called to use his gifts to help others through cancer research.
“I may not have all the answers, but I can depend upon the knowledge that God has given me to find solutions to human disease,” Amos said. “That woman was my first encounter with cancer and since, I’ve seen how cancer affects humanity. I asked God to use me as an instrument to help the world better understand this disease.”
Amos began working for the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research in Abuja, Nigeria, as a researcher and professor. There, he studied the effects of natural products — plants, fruits and vegetables — on different disease states, including hypertension, diabetes, malaria and sickle cell disease. Upon moving to the United States in 2000, Amos began training at the University of Virginia so he could better understand the molecular basis of cancer growth, specifically in the brain and prostate. Ten years later, after successfully publishing several research papers on cancer research, Amos joined Cedarville University’s faculty in the school of pharmacy.
“I was drawn to Cedarville because of its mission and vision,” Amos said. “Most importantly, Cedarville gave me the platform to share my faith and genuinely come alongside students to make a significant kingdom impact.”
Despite the change of environment, Amos continued studying cancer cells and the molecular basis of cancer growth, while exploring the effects of natural products on various diseases — specifically targeting brain tumors.
“I wanted to research the use of plant compounds to help in the management of brain tumors and glioblastomas,” Amos said. “When a patient develops a glioblastoma, they are placed on a drug called Temozolomide, which has a minimal clinical outcome. Because of this, I wanted to find out whether there were things in nature that could help us unravel the mystery of this disease and better manage brain tumors.”
Due to the resistance and low clinical outcomes of Temozolomide on both the tumor and patient, Amos decided to research whether he could use a lower dose of Temozolomide, as well as a small dose of two different natural products found in plants to treat brain tumors as well as other cancers.
Using an in vitro setting — the use of a bench in the lab as opposed to live animals — Amos and his team of Cedarville Doctor of Pharmacy students studied the effect of both agents to treat brain tumors. The results were overwhelming.
"Our preliminary data in vitro clearly shows that this combination is synergistic,” Amos said. “When we use a low dose of Temozolomide and our natural product, we have a better biological readout than when we use a higher concentration of Temozolomide.”
Encouraged by the positive results, Amos plans to continue his research with the help of his students.
“I have had many Cedarville students from pharmacy, math and science who have expressed interest in our cancer research,” Amos said. “If these students have an interest, it behooves me to train and come alongside them in their passion.”
Amos’ cancer research is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Cedarville students. Already, their work is being cited in research projects. Other educational institutions are also vying to come alongside Cedarville’s School of Pharmacy in this research.
But, despite the initial success, Amos sees their research having a deeper kingdom impact.
"I want to ensure that when students graduate from Cedarville, they have all that is required for them to be successful clinicians,” Amos said. “But more importantly, I want them to carry Christ into their hospital and allow patients to see the genuine and compassionate care that Christ has for all humanity.”
The voice in Nigeria that spurred Amos toward cancer research has been silenced as she ultimately passed away from breast cancer. However, Amos vows to continue searching for a medical breakthrough for cancer so he can help future voices who are facing a cancer diagnosis.

Exceeding Expectations: Cedarville Pharmacy Grads Land Top Residencies
CEDARVILLE, OHIO – With graduation less than one month ago, Cedarville University's Doctor of Pharmacy graduates are rapidly securing residency positions at some of the leading health care centers in the United States. And, they are being matched at a higher rate than the national average.
Cedarville’s match rate for this year’s graduating class is 82.6%, exceeding the national average of 75.98%.
This year, students received residencies at many national health centers known for excellence, including The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Medical University of South Carolina and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, as well as local centers, including Dayton Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy.
The school of pharmacy’s residency match rates for Pharm.D. graduates showcase the exceptional preparation these students receive. As part of the school’s relentless pursuit of transformation, Cedarville pharmacy graduates are well-prepared with critical thinking skills for advanced practice as a pharmacist, with active and experiential learning built into the curriculum.
“We are very intentional in helping students integrate their faith with their practice,” said Dr. Justin Cole, chair and associate professor of pharmacy practice and director for the Center for Pharmacy Innovation. “As a result, our students are recognized for their ethics, integrity and professionalism, all desired by residency program directors.”
Landing residency positions puts pharmacy graduates in a position to be change agents early in their careers, something that just over half of the graduating class has accomplished.
“In the U.S. health care system, we do a good job of helping sick people get well, but we don’t always do a good job of keeping them from becoming patients. We have more of a sick care system than a health care system,” Cole said. “We need great pharmacists with advanced training who are ready to change that paradigm, and landing residencies helps our graduates do just that.”
